Getting into Yoga| 17 January, 2012 23:30 In the beginning you have to make room for Yoga in your daily life, and give it the place it deserves. Everybody can practice Yoga. You do not need of special equipment or clothing. You will need just a little bit space and a desire for healthy and fulfilling life. Yoga postures or asanas affect all parts of the body. They stretch and tone the muscles and joints, the spine and the whole bone structure. But they affect not only the musculoskeletal system, and the internal organs, the endocrine and nervous systems and keep the whole body in good health. Yoga postures release huge energy potential, removing physical and mental stress. Yogic breathing exercises, known as pranayama, vivify the body and give power over the mind, leaving behind a sense of cheerfulness and peace. And practicing positive thinking and meditation, clears the mind and strenghtens the mind and concentration.
Yoga is a complete sciense of life, occured in India thousands of years ago. It is the most ancient system of personal development aimed to the body, mind and spirit on the same time. Ancient Yogis possessed thorough knowledge of human nature, what a human being needs to live in harmony with himself and with the outside world. They viewed the physical body as a means of transport, guided by the mind. They believed that the soul of a man is his true character and action, emotion and intellect seen as moving three forces of the body. To allow full development, these three forces must be in balance. based on understanding relationship between mind and body, they create a unique method for maintaining this balance - a method including all the necessary physical health movements with breathing techniques and meditation, providing peace of mind.

CommentsTo my mind Sivananda is the perfect type of yoga just the right mix of spirituality, workout, stretching and relaxation all in one. I always feel fantastic afterwards! So when I moved and couldnt find a class in my area, I really missed it. Tried Ashtangatoo many pushups! Iyengar&so much time on alignment and never broke a sweat! Gym yoga class&how do they even call this yoga? So I got this book, and it basically took me right back to the classes I used to take at the Sivananda center on 24th St., minus the chanting and a few of the variations. I use it all the time. The poses are explained well, especially if you have practiced them in a class before, with lots of diagrams and pictures and they include plenty of variations. The quick reference chart is great to remind you what order things go in or if you just want a quick half-hour session. Also good advice on diet and meditation and yoga in general.
